mountains
"Climbing is all about freedom, the freedom to go beyond all the rules and take a chance, to experience something new, to gain insight into human nature."
Reinhold Messner
In the 17th century, humans despised nature, especially mountains, dismissing them as “boils of the earth” or “useless obstacles”. Moreover, many thought about mountains as home to merciless gods who ejected lava or who sent down avalanches.
Today, however, people are fascinated by mountains, taking on torturous and risky ascents. Their wild natures and overwhelming sizes humble us. The higher one climbs, the more ones perspective on the world and on oneself changes. Until, at the summit, one is suddenly filled with an overwhelming joy and connection with nature.
